Selangor’s exports grow by 20.9 pct in Dec 2021, majority of states see similar boost — DOSM

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 — All states in Malaysia, with the exception of Kelantan and Labuan, recorded stronger exports in December 2021, led by Penang with exports worth RM42 billion.

According to the Statistics Department (DoSM), of the top five exporting states, Penang was the top exporter with a share of 33.9 per cent, followed by Selangor and Johor (both 17.2 per cent), Sarawak (7.6 per cent) and Sabah (3.8 per cent).

Both Selangor and Johor saw exports growth of RM21.3 billion, an increase of 20.9 per cent and 7.9 per cent, respectively, it said in a statement today.

Sarawak’s exports rose by 43.7 per cent to RM9.4 billion, while both Kedah and Sabah recorded exports worth RM4.7 billion — a rise of 74.4 per cent and 68 per cent, respectively.

Terengganu’s exports surged 85.7 per cent to RM2.7 billion, while Pahang’s exports rose 31 per cent to RM3.6 billion in December 2021.

Kuala Lumpur’s exports grew to RM3.8 billion (+27.6 per cent), followed by Melaka at RM3.6 billion (+15 per cent), Perak (RM3.3 billion, +11.0 per cent), Negeri Sembilan (RM2 billion, +5.8 per cent) and Perlis (RM100 million, +8.1 per cent).

However, exports by Kelantan and Labuan decreased by 9.9 per cent and 3.5 per cent to RM400 million and RM500 million, respectively.

In terms of total trade, Penang took the lead at RM64.3 billion, the highest among all states, said DoSM.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said Penang’s exports jumped by 41.7 per cent due to the rise in exports of electronic integrated circuits, electrical and electronic products and piezo-electric crystals and parts, while the state’s imports rose by 28.6 per cent to RM22.3 billion.

Meanwhile, imports by Selangor rose by 16.3 per cent to RM25.3 billion, and Sarawak’s imports rose by 51.5 per cent to RM2.7 billion.

Other states which recorded growth in imports were Kedah (RM6.1 billion, +54.5 per cent), Sabah (RM800 million, +33.2 per cent), and Johor (RM16.5 billion, +9.6 per cent).

Terengganu’s imports rose 33.8 per cent to RM500 million, Pahang (RM2.1 billion, +58.6 per cent), Kuala Lumpur (RM7.0 billion, +39.7 per cent), Perak (RM3.2 billion, +20.5 per cent), Negeri Sembilan (RM3.4 billion , +66.3 per cent), and Perlis (RM100 million, +10.3 per cent).

Conversely, both Kelantan and Labuan saw their imports slip to RM200 million, while Melaka’s imports dropped 23.9 per cent to RM1.8 billion.

Malaysia’s total trade for December 2021 amounted to RM216.7 billion, an increase of 26.8 per cent year-on-year, with exports at RM123.8 billion (+29.2 per cent) and imports at RM92.9 billion (+23.6 per cent).
