Selangor’s free health screening programme to begin in March

PETALING JAYA, Feb 13 — The free health screening initiative, Saring Selangor, will be offered across the 56 state constituencies in Selangor beginning March.

State executive councillor for public health Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said the free health checks would focus on non-communicable diseases (NCD) to allow the public to detect the illnesses at an early stage.

Apart from that, the state’s cancer screening programme, or CanSEL, will also be conducted next month.

“There will be four types of screening that will be conducted at the community level. The screenings would be for breast (mammogram), cervical, colorectal (colon), and prostate (cancer). The screening for cancer will be to obtain samples.

“If cancer or disease is detected, then we will take early preventive measures. This is part of the state government efforts to address public health issues,” said Dr Siti Mariam when met at a free cervical screening programme at the MBPJ Dewan Komuniti in Damansara Damai, here today.

On November 26, 2021, Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari had announced a total of RM65 million funds to improve public health under the 2022 Selangor Budget.

The allocation includes RM1.5 million will help 5,000 recipients receive medical checkups under Saring Selangor and RM1 million to fund mammograms and cervical, colorectal and prostate screenings,

The funds are inclusive of RM5 million allocation to offer free heart treatment to eligible recipients and RM300,000 for the Slim Selangor programme to educate the public on healthy lifestyle choices.

Other initiatives include a RM5 million to be used to control dengue outbreaks, including exploring the use of drones to monitor outbreak zones and developing an app to map dengue hotspots.
