Swathes of Malaysia to experience strong weather this evening

SHAH ALAM, Feb 22 — A good portion of the country is expected to undergo heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds until later this evening, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia)

In a statement issued at 4.15pm, it said the weather pattern will affect Selangor, Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory, and Putrajaya Federal Territory in general until 9pm today.

“Other states which will experience heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds include Kedah (Yan, Kuala Muda, Kulim, and Bandar Baharu) and Penang (Seberang Perai Utara, Seberang Perai Tengah, and Seberang Perai Selatan)

“Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang Dan Selama, Kuala Kangsar, Manjung, Kinta, Perak Tengah, Kampar, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang, and Muallim) will also undergo such weather, as will Negeri Sembilan (Seremban and Port Dickson) and Johor (Tangkak, Muar, and Batu Pahat),” MetMalaysia said.

The remaining states and areas will also be affected by heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds until 8pm today, including Kelantan (Kuala Krai and Gua Musang) Terengganu (Hulu Terengganu and Dungun) Pahang (Jerantut) as well as Kluang and Kulai in Johor.

In East Malaysia, Sarawak’s affected areas include Kuching (Bau and Kuching), Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu (Sibu and Selangau), Mukah, Kapit (Belaga), Bintulu (Tatau) dan Limbang (Lawas) while in Sabah it is Pedalaman (Sipitang), Tawau (Lahad Datu), Sandakan (Kinabatangan and Beluran) dan Kudat (Pitas and Kudat).

“Warnings are issued whenever signs indicate a thunderstorm with a rain intensity exceeding 20 mm that is close to or is expected to occur in excess of an hour.

“A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid for a period not exceeding six hours for a single release,” it said.
