Exco: Orang Asli community receives 6,000 food baskets in the past year

PORT KLANG, March 4 — Up to 6,000 food baskets have been distributed to 74 Orang Asli settlements and villages throughout Selangor since last year, said state executive councillor for Orang Asli affairs Hee Loy Sian.

The food baskets were contributed by the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong and Macau (Maycham China)

“I only presented these contributions which were fully sponsored by NGOs, and it is the third such distribution programme to the Orang Asli community.

“Before this, during the first and second round the state government prepared RM300,000 in assistance allocations,” he told SelangorKini during his visit and distribution programme to Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Dua in Pulau Ketam earlier today.

On today’s aid, Hee said Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Dua was the last destination of the programme, involving 18 families.

“The programme was interrupted due to the Movement Control Order following the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the recent floods.

“However I hope these contributions will be able to lighten their burdens and to ensure their food supply is not cut off during the pandemic,” he said.

The councillor added the authorities will continue to aid the Orang Asli communities throughout Selangor, including channelling financial aid and restoring infrastructure.
