Exco: Ramadan bazaars in Selangor to offer cashless payment

By Alang Bendahara

SHAH ALAM, March 17 — In an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19, the Selangor government will promote cashless payment methods at all of its Ramadan bazaars this year.

State executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han said the local councils in Selangor had taken steps to implement the initiative during the Muslim fasting month, which begins April 3.

“The local councils have offered 241 locations involving 12,578 plots in Selangor for the Ramadan bazaars.

“The local councils have also implemented several other initiatives such as promoting bazaar lots to the traders, allocating vacant lots to unlicensed traders, and promoting cashless payment methods at the bazaars,” he told the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

Ng was responding to a question from Sementa state assemblyman Dr Daroyah Alwi on efforts made by the local authorities to help traders affected by the Covid-19 pandemic to sell their goods at the Ramadan bazaars.

Ng said those who will not be involved in Ramadan bazaars would still be allowed to conduct their business activities per the standard operation procedure (SOP) during the allowed operational hours.

Meanwhile, in answering a supplementary question on the used cooking oil recycling programme similar to the one implemented by the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), Ng said 30 Ramadan bazaars would be providing containers to collect used cooking oil.

“The state government had always encouraged traders at the bazaars to recycle the used cooking oil. Local councils such as MBSJ had taken the initiative to place containers to collect used cooking oil at the bazaars.

“There are companies and non-governmental organisations that had approached us to offer this service. Therefore, this year, to start the initiative, we will be providing containers to collect used cooking oil at 30 Ramadan bazaars in the state,” said Ng, answering Balakong state assemblyman Wong Siew Ki.
