RakanMET upgraded as user-friendly mobile app

KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — RakanMET, a weather as well as disaster information sharing platform has been upgraded to a more user-friendly mobile app.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said the RakanMET application launched today was an information-sharing platform between users and MetMalaysia which is community service-oriented and smart partnership based.

“Each report shared is based on the user’s phone’s current location settings through the Global Positioning System (GPS). In addition, this application also provides current weather forecast information and this information is available within 30 minutes for a period of up to three hours,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said RakanMET previously accessed through the website would continue to serve as a two-way communication medium between the public and MetMalaysia in obtaining quick information on verified and accurate weather conditions.

He said the app can be downloaded through Google Play for free and will be expanded to App Store this April.

Muhammad Helmi said in conjunction with World Meteorological Day, which is celebrated annually on March 23, MetMalaysia is holding a Pocket Talk session entitled ‘Early Warning and Early Action’ which will be held live via Facebook Live on MetMalaysia’s official Facebook page at 10am today.
