Selangor contributes nearly RM50,000 to Socso for e-hailing riders’ protection

SHAH ALAM, March 29 — A total of RM46,600 has been allocated by the state government for e-hailing and p-hailing riders’ contribution to the Social Security Organisation (Socso) this year.

State executive councillor for socio-economic development V Ganabatirau said the contribution amount to RM46.60 a year under the Self-Employed Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) which benefits some 1,000 workers in the sector.

He said the initiative was taken to protect them after the realisation that the majority of workers have yet to contribute to any protection scheme.

“We took the opportunity to join the special programme given that most of the riders are self-employed and do not have any insurance protection.

“The contribution fee for each worker is RM232.80. However after taking into account various reasons, we managed to obtain an 80 per cent discount. Thank you to Socso for their commitment,” Ganabatirau said after launching the GIG Care programme at Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah earlier today.

He added the state government through the Selangor Workers’ Empowerment Unit (UPPS) plans to increase the quota of recipients next year following encouraging response from the riders.

Ganabatirau also urged employers to offer similar protection subsidies to their workers given the high number of accidents they face.

“Even though we hope to help all workers, we face several constraints thus only those who are eligible can be helped as part of the awareness action.

“This is not a norm and protection has to be further extended since there are hundreds of thousands in Selangor who are involved in this sector,” he said.
