Selangor records 70 landslides during ongoing Northeast monsoon period

SHAH ALAM, March 10 — A total of 70 landslides were reported by the Kuala Lumpur Department of Mineral and Geoscience (JMG) in Selangor during the current Northeast Monsoon period until March 8.

According to the agency, Kuala Lumpur recorded 115 cases, the highest in the country.

A total of 311 landslides were reported nationwide during this period.

Landslides were also recorded in Pahang (43 cases), Negeri Sembilan (28 cases), Sabah (23 cases), Sarawak (16 cases), Terengganu (13 cases) and one each in Melaka, Johor and Perak.

“According to reports, the landslides involved slopes, roads, housing estates and forest reserves.

“A landslide at a quarry in the Kinta district was also reported, which trapped several victims,” JMG said.

Among the immediate steps taken to deal with landslides is the installation of canvases and barriers to reduce earth movement.

In addition, private landowners have also been asked to vacate affected sites or houses.

For areas near residences, occupants were instructed to temporarily evacuate so that remedial work can be carried out, such as in Batu Caves and Shah Alam.

It is understood that JMG is ready to provide advice to the parties involved in reducing the risk of landslides.
