Strong quake hits east coast of Honshu, Japan

KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 — A strong earthquake, measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck the east coast of Honshu in Japan at 10.35pm last night, according to a statement from the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

It said the epicentre of the quake was 79 km southeast of Sendai, Japan with a depth of 47 km.

However, based on the department’s initial assessment, it did not pose a tsunami threat to Malaysia.
