Wee: MRT3 project crucial to complete Klang Valley integrated transit system

KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 — The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) 3 Circle Line project, which is expected to be fully completed in 2030, is a crucial line for the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong.

He said it would increase the connectivity with its ten interchange stations and eight existing transit rail lines.

According to him the MRT3 project will also expand the coverage of the public transportation network in the Klang Valley and provide access to transit rails for communities who do not or have less access to public transportation services.

“An example of good connectivity is at Titiwangsa Station, which will be an efficient public transport hub. This station will be an interchange station for five transit rail lines, namely MRT3, MRT Putrajaya, LRT Ampang, LRT Sri Petaling and Monorail KL,” he said during a media conference here today.

He said a city bus transport hub would also be built in Titiwangsa to further enhance the connectivity of various modes of transportation for the convenience of users.

Also present was MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim.

Earlier at Dewan Rakyat today, Wee said the MRT3 project was a 51-kilometre (km) circle line in which 39 km located in Kuala Lumpur and 12 km in Selangor and would intersect with existing rail networks.

The Cabinet approved the implementation of MRT3 on March 4 to complete the existing transportation infrastructure in the Klang Valley by providing integrated, affordable and smooth services for Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family).

The MRT3 project was suspended under the Pakatan Harapan government before the Cabinet under Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s leadership agreed to continue with the project last year.

Wee said the project would be implemented using the turnkey contract method with four contracts for construction works, two packages for elevated works, one underground work package and one system work package.

“Construction activities will be monitored directly by MRT Corp as the project developer and assisted by the project management consultant,” he said.

He said the project would be opened for tender in May, adding that the jobs were expected to be awarded in the fourth quarter of this year.

Meanwhile, Mohd Zarif said the construction cost for the MRT3 project was estimated as the same as the cost for Putrajaya MRT Line, which was around RM31 billion, adding that the actual cost could only be known after the open tender process was completed.
