Air Selangor: 463 areas face water cuts due to pollution in Sungai Semenyih

SHAH ALAM, April 30 — A forced shutdown of the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant (WTP) has resulted in unscheduled water supply disruptions for 463 areas in five regions, said Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor).

In a statement issued at 5pm today, the agency said the regions include Sepang (194), Petaling (172), Hulu Langat (54), Putrajaya (23), and Kuala Langat (20).

The WTP had to temporarily cease its operations at 12.15pm noon today after diesel odour pollution was detected in Sungai Semenyih.

“However, as the odour pollution reading was at 0 threshold odour number (TON) at 4pm today, the Sungai Semenyih WTP has restarted operating to start the cleaning process.

“The supply of clean and treated water is expected to be distributed in stages to consumers starting at 12.30am, tomorrow (May 1, 2022),” said Air Selangor.

WTP is only allowed to operate when the reading is 0 TON.

The agency said alternative water assistance through water tankers has been mobilised to the affected areas, with priority given to critical premises during the unscheduled water supply disruption.

For official information on water supply disruptions, visit Air Selangor’s official communication channels, namely the Air Selangor application, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and the website at www.airselangor.com.

Inquiries and complaints can also be submitted to the Air Selangor Contact Centre at 15300 or Help Centre via the Air Selangor application.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement on Facebook, Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) said they have started an investigation into the pollution.

The agency said they first received information from Air Selangor on diesel odour pollution that was detected at the Sungai Semenyih (Jenderam Hilir) WTP inlet at 12.30pm noon today.

“Investigations are being conducted by Luas into several locations that may be the source of the pollution,” it said.

Luas said following that report, it has increased the frequency of odour sampling at static monitoring locations nearby from 1 hour to 30 minutes to closely monitor the current status of river water.
