KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — Selangor government has allocated more than RM600,000 over the past three years to take care of the welfare of its former athletes who made the state famous during their careers.
State executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman said the assistance includes cash and welfare aid like house repairs as well as electricity supply.
“Under the Ceria Atlet programme assistance was provided to repair homes and provide new furniture which has benefited 150 former athletes,” he said at the Aidilfitri aid handover ceremony to athletes at Yayasan Kebajikan Atlet Kebangsaan in Bukit Kiara.
Mohd Khairuddin also hopes the Federal government will create a specific ecosystem or platform to look after the welfare of former athletes.
“On the state government level, we can only provide business platforms and courses while policies and regulations is all under the Federal government,” he added.
Last year, a total of 50 former athletes and para-athletes received state assistance amounting to RM195,450 through the 2021 Ceria Atlet Para Selangor programme.
