Recycle used cooking oil to conserve environment, Ramadan bazaar traders told

By Zareef Muzammil

SUBANG JAYA, April 14 — Ramadan bazaar traders in Selangor are encouraged to recycle used cooking oil as it would help in reducing the environmental pollution.

State executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han said the used cooking oil could be collected in the bins provided by the local councils before being taken to the recycling centre.

He said to date, nearly 50 Ramadan bazaars have provided the bins, with 10 of them under the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ).

“We encourage the traders to recycle the used cooking oil because it would cause hygiene and environmental issues if it is not properly discarded,” he said when met after visiting the Ramadan bazaar in Puncak Jalil and breaking fast with the traders, yesterday.

Ng, who is also the Kinrara state assemblyman, said that 56.25 kilogrammes of used cooking oil had been collected from the Ramadan bazaar across the state in the first week of the fasting month.

He said 27.5 kilogrammes were collected from four bazaars under Petaling Jaya City Council, 18 kilogrammes under Selayang Municipal Council, and 10.75 kilogrammes under MBSJ.

“The response is encouraging given that this is the first time we implemented this initiative, and we expect the amount of collection would increase in the following week.

“We had not set any target (on the collection of used cooking oil), but hopefully, this effort would be continued next year,” he said.
