KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — The state government will hold discussions with the Selangor Sports Council (MSN) regarding the type of sports that will be competed in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2022.

State executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman said several matters need to be considered in light of the Movement Control Order and economic woes.

“Our preparations are the same as other states and all of it have restrictions due to the pandemic.

“Sukma’s supreme council has not yet decided on what kind of sports but on the Selangor level we will see the abilities of athletes. Perhaps there are sports which we will not join,” he said.

Mohd Khairuddin said this during the Aidilfitri Contributions Handover ceremony to commemorate the achievements of Selangor’s athletes at Yayasan Kebajikan Atlet Kebangsaan in Bukit Kiara earlier today.

Selangor is aiming for at least 60 gold medals and the third best place in Sukma 2022.

The 20th edition of the sports which has been postponed for the past two years following the Covid-19 pandemic will be held throughout the Klang Valley.

At the ceremony, many of Selangor’s former athletes expressed their gratitude for the state government’s contributions to them in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Former silat athlete Abdul Malek Abdul Rahman said he is very thankful to the state government for the cash aid provided to him and his peers.

“I feel very fortunate as the aid provided can help relieve our burden, especially for disabled former athletes,” he told SelangorKini.

Similarly, former silat athlete Rozita Latip said the contribution is very meaningful as it meant they are appreciated.

“Asides from the aid, I hope more funds are allocated as many former athletes need aid. Job opportunities should also be prepared so these athletes can generate their own income,” she said.

Some 200 former athletes whose past achievements brought fame to Selangor received RM200 in cash aid which was presented by Mohd Khairuddin during the ceremony.

The initiative is among the approaches taken as a gesture of appreciation for the athletes’ accomplishments which contributed to the development of sports in both the state and country.
