Selangor remains top destination for manufacturing projects

SHAH ALAM, April 13 — Selangor has retained its position as the top destination for manufacturing projects registering 247 investment projects in 2021, says Invest Selangor Berhad (Invest Selangor).

Citing the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) data, Invest Selangor said the state had also created the highest employment opportunities in the country, with some 14,393 jobs offered to its multitalented and multiskilled workers.

“Since 2017, Selangor has been in the forefront annually and received some 1,329 investment projects with a total capital investment of RM67.5 billion. These projects have accumulated a total of 83,934 employment opportunities in the manufacturing sector in the state.

“Last year, Selangor received a total of RM7.5 billion of investment in the manufacturing sector in 2021, contributed mainly by Domestic Direct Investment (DDI), with an investment value of RM6.1 billion,” said Invest Selangor in a statement, adding that investment projects in rubber, chemical, electrical and electronics and transport equipment sectors were among the top industries.

It said the sectors had contributed 71 per cent and were valued at RM5.36 billion to the total investment value.

“The focus industry cluster remained the largest contributor to the approved investment value,” the statement read.

The state’s investment arm said DDI had remained a strong source of investment for Selangor since 2017.

It said that the state had received RM31.1 billion (46 per cent of total investment in the manufacturing sector for 2017-2021) while maintaining DDI at an average of RM6 billion annually.

“The local manufacturers also have continued investing in their capabilities and capacities in Selangor to be part of a matured industry supply chain ecosystem.

“Over 60 per cent of Selangor’s total investment in 2021 was attributed to expansion activities, signalling strong confidence among investors on the matured supply chain and robust business ecosystem in the state,” said the statement, citing several notable expansion projects by Hartalega Holdings Bhd, Top Glove Corp Bhd, Duopharma Biotech Bhd and Datasonic Group Bhd domestically, and Denso Corp and Wistron Corp on the international level.

Meanwhile, Invest Selangor said that the unpredictability nature of the pandemic and delayed economic growth and the absence of the state’s promotional missions and engagement sessions overseas due to the closing of international borders had contributed to a comparatively lower FDI in 2021.

However, it said despite the comparatively lower investment performance recorded last year, the state would continue to focus on attracting high value and impactful projects to both potential domestic and foreign investors.

“The move would help create high-quality employment opportunities for over 6.5 million people in the state,” it said.
