SHAH ALAM, April 6 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will be offering vouchers worth RM15 to customers who bring their own food containers or reusable shopping bags to Ramadan bazaars under its jurisdiction.
Mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir said 2,000 shopping vouchers are up for grabs at the bazaars’ entrance as part of the council’s effort to reduce the use of polystyrene food containers and plastic bags.
“Each bazaar has a different quota. The vouchers are valid for purchases on that particular day only. Customers can get the vouchers every day but need to bring their own food containers or reusable shopping bags.
“This effort is in line with the state government’s Go Green programme and the No Plastic Bag campaign to conserve the environment,” he said in a statement.
For this year MBPJ has approved 20 Ramadan bazaar locations involving 646 traders throughout this month that operate from 4pm to 7pm.
In February, state executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian said the state’s plastic bag-free campaign will be expanded on a large scale this year to reduce its usage.
