MB: Fallow land to be turned into agricultural sites to guarantee food security

SHAH ALAM, May 20 — Fallow land in the state will be turned into agricultural sites to ensure sufficient food supply and to accommodate the needs of the people, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said several areas have been identified as being suitable for agriculture, including 30 acres of land in Bukit Cheeding, Banting, which is being turned into a planting site for crops including vegetables, chillies, and coconuts.

“It is being developed by the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS) since last year. In fact, to ensure the food security program that is being organised, we are targeting between 1,000 to 2,000 acres of fallow land a year,” Amirudin said.

He was speaking at the Teachers’ Day 2022 celebration and the launch of the Selangor People’s Tutoring Programme (PTRS) at Dewan Jubli Perak in the Selangor State Legislative Building earlier today.

The state government has allocated RM67 million for the development of the agricultural sector in Selangor for a five-year period (2021-2025).

This move is to ensure additional agricultural space, increase output productivity, strengthen PKPS, increase the agropreneur incentive and implement modern farming methods.

It is in line with Selangor’s aim to become the country’s food reserve centre in the future, as well as reduce the dependency on imported goods.
