Propose motion on waste management during state assembly sitting – Deputy speaker

By Zareef Muzammil

KUALA LANGAT, May 30 — Selangor state representatives should propose a motion on efforts to improve the waste management system in the state during the upcoming Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting, says Deputy Speaker Hasnul Baharuddin.

He said since systematic domestic waste management is a global issue, it would be an interesting topic of discussion to be raised at the state assembly sitting, which is scheduled to reconvene in August.

“Recently, Speaker Ng Suee Lim, Bandar Utama state assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, Kampung Tunku state assemblyman Lim Yi Wei and I had attended a programme organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association at New South Wales in Australia.

“We were exposed to several issues during the programme, including waste management and recycling. The problem faced by their country is also a significant concern worldwide.

“Therefore, we would like to suggest for the state representatives to file a motion on this matter during the state assembly sitting so that we could improve our efforts in waste separation, especially domestic waste so that it could facilitate the recycling process,” he said when met after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at the Dewan Majlis Pengurusan Komuniti Kampung (MPKK) Seri Jugra here, last night.

Hasnul, who is also the Morib state assemblyman, said the issue is essential and should be discussed so that the Federal government would take a holistic move.

“From what we see, there is no political will coming from the Housing and Local Government Ministry to execute the matter efficiently,” he added.

Apart from discussing the waste management issues, Hasnul said the programme had also provided some exposure to parliamentary operating procedures and the roles and appearance of elected representatives.
