State govt ready to discuss with suppliers to overcome chicken shortages

By Norrasyidah Arshad

GOMBAK, May 21 — The chicken supply in Selangor is sufficient for the time being to meet consumers’ demands, despite a drop in numbers compared to before, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said currently suppliers are unable to provide large amounts of chicken but that discussions will be held to ensure a certain capacity can be provided to consumers in the state.

“We are ready to meet with any parties including suppliers. The chicken problem is not only affecting consumers but suppliers as well.

“Those running businesses and livestock farming must also bear the losses in the long term,” Amirudin said after his visit to monitor the PKR Gombak elections at Dewan Beringin earlier today.

The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry had announced it will send additional chicken supplies to any states that are facing shortages, as a short-term alternative.

Its deputy minister Datuk Rosol Wahid said the move will reduce consumers’ unease, following a shortage of chicken supplies in several states after several companies closed down their ranches.
