Exco urges state reps to promote Selangor Saring among Orang Asli

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — State representatives with Orang Asli communities in their constituencies have been asked to promote the Selangor Saring free health screening programme among them, said state executive councillor for Orang Asli affairs Hee Loy Sian.

He said the state assemblymen should also figure out ways to get them to the screening location as most Orang Asli face transportation issues.

“We hope the state assemblymen can play their roles in highlighting the need to go for screenings, which is not an easy task as the Orang Asli still believe in traditional medicine.

“We have announced the programme through residents’ associations, but also require state representatives to help in getting more Orang Asli to go for screenings,” Hee said.

The councillor was speaking at the launch of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (KLSCCCI) Mobile Photography Competition, at the Wisma Chinese Chamber earlier today.

He said so far they have yet to receive data on the number of Orang Asli who have registered or have undergone the programme.

The state government has allocated RM3.4 million for Selangor Saring, which is estimated to help up to 39,000 people, especially those with a family history of illnesses, those who are overweight, and those who live unhealthy lifestyles.

Physical screenings, blood and urine testing, eye exams, and cancer early detection tests are all part of the programme, which runs until September 4 across the state.

This week, the programme will continue at five constituencies including Dengkil and Sungai Ramal on Saturday, while on Sunday it will run in Sungai Pelek, Pandan Indah and Teratai.
