Kedah student with cerebral palsy scores in SPM

ALOR SETAR, June 16 — Suffering from cerebral palsy is not an obstacle for Dhia Qaseh Afia Mohd Fadzil to score excellent results in the 2021 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

A student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Dato Lela Pahlawan in Padang Serai near Kulim, Dhia is one of two special candidates in Kedah who scored excellent results when she chalked up 3A, 2A-, 1B+, 1C+ and 2D.

“Normally, I will do my revisions between 3pm and 4pm and later from 9pm to 11.30pm. I will also divide my time between studying and playing.

“My favourite subject is the English language and my ambition is to be teacher one day,” she said when met at SMK Agama (SMKA) after the SPM results were announced today.

Meanwhile, her mother Noraida Hassan, 44, said as the eldest of two children, Dhia has always shown a special interest in education and as a mother, she will give undivided support to both her children.

According to her, physically, Dhia Qaseh Afia walks and writes slowly. She also tends to mumble but those who have known Dhia like her friends and teachers, understand her well.

“She is also independent. She makes her own revision schedule. My husband (Mohd Fadzil Baharom Shah, 46,) and I will only help by sending her to school and giving her money for her to buy internet data for her studies.

“She is also a homely person because most of her time is spent at school and home to study. She also likes to surf the Internet to gather material and if there is a subject that she does not understand, she will refer and ask her teachers,” she said.

Noraida, a housewife, said she was shocked when she was informed by her daughter’s teacher that Dhia Qaseh Afia scored good results in her SPM examination.

“Honestly I did not expect her to score. I have always said I would be happy if she just passed the exam because I know her ability. She has been suffering the disease since birth, so she cannot learn like a normal person,” she added.
