SHAH ALAM, June 29 — The number of dengue fever cases in areas under the jurisdiction of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has increased by 100 in a week, according to reports lodged with the authorities.

Mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir said there has been an increase of 18 per cent since June 12, compared to 85 cases in the previous week.

“The number of dengue fever cases jumped to 1,874, involving 21 controlled outbreak localities, followed by 14 uncontrolled and five hotspots.

“Following the increase, MBPJ has carried out control and prevention methods by destroying mosquito breeding grounds in 12,391 premises, as well as organising various awareness programs,” he said in a statement.

Mohamad Azhan added the council has also taken enforcement action against guilty individuals by issuing a total of 133 compounds, followed by 16 notices and two construction site closures.

On June 15, state executive councillor for public health Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said the authorities are implementing a pilot project based on new technology for the efficient monitoring of dengue locations.

She said the project, with a RM5 million allocation, involves drone usage and the development of an epidemic hotspot detection app that can be accessed by the public.
