PKPS able to offer lower food pricing despite increased raw material costs

SHAH ALAM, June 13 — The Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS) has been delivering lower food prices than the market price under the Ehsan Food Prices Intervention Programme, since December last year.

Its chief executive officer Dr Mohamad Khairil Mohamad Razi said the agency’s ability to sell food items at a discounted price of 20 to 25 per cent had proven that it is able to fight the rising cost of raw ingredients, which was putting a strain on the people.

He said that efforts like Jualan Prihatin Rakyat had made it easier and more affordable for people to buy food such as chicken, eggs, and vegetables.

“Take chicken, for example. Within 32 days of each harvest cycle, we provided 500,000 chickens to be sold at RM8 per kilogramme (kg). “This programme has been successful in assisting people, particularly those from the B40 income category,” said Mohamad Khairil on the Astro Awani’s live talk show Niaga Awani titled Food Security: Preparations in Facing a Crisis (Sekuriti Makanan: Siap Siaga Hadapi Krisis Buruk) held at Pasar Borong Selangor, Seri Kembangan, today.

According to Mohamad Khairil, PKPS was formed not only to make profit, but also to relieve the people’s burdens.

“That is why we approach people (through the programmes). We want to return the profit to them,” he said.

The state-endorsed initiative, which sells fresh goods at low costs, is held in 64 locations every weekend across the state.

Other products available through the programme include fresh meat for RM35 per kilogramme, mackerel fish (RM8 per box), and cooking oil.

On May 19, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced that the programme has benefited 60,000 families.
