Selphac committee members work together to realise vision, mission as public advisors — MB

SHAH ALAM, June 8 — The Selangor Public Health Advisory Council (Selphac) committee members will work collectively, aiming to achieve the vision and mission that has been set.

Committee member Dr Mohammad Farhan Rusli said large investments to set up the council has proven the Selangor government is aware of the people’s health.

“We will work collectively to carry out the same mission of ensuring the public health programmes go on smoothly. We will discuss, evaluate and find the best solutions to resolve any related issues.

“The results might not be immediately visible within a month or two, but rather within the next 10 to 20 years. This is why the state government provided a huge allocation because it is a long-term investment for the people’s health,” he said when met after Selphac’s launch yesterday.

The event was officiated by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari at the state government administration building.

Meanwhile, Universiti Sains Malaysia Public Health and Epidemiology senior consultant Professor Dr Mohamed Rusli Abdullah said he was tasked with the responsibility of expanding the role of the Selangor Community Health Volunteer (Suka) which previously helped to deal with Covid-19 cases.

He said Suka members in 56 state constituencies will be trained to manage non-communicable diseases (NCD) in the Selangor Saring programme, as well as other health programmes in the future.

“They will be guided by professional trainers from the Health Ministry, non-governmental organisations and other agencies with the relevant skills and expertise, with assessments being done from time to time.

“This does not only involve the screening or medical programmes but also to empower the people in Selangor with knowledge and how to control NCDs,” Dr Mohamed Rusli said.

On April 13, the state government approved the formation of Selphac to empower the structure and functions of the public health standing committee, as well as strengthening the public health agenda as Malaysia transitions to the endemic phase.

Selphac committee members play a role in raising awareness and literacy levels related to public health through policy proposals and programmes.

They will also identify current issues related to public health and propose solutions while expanding the functions of community leaders in highlighting the agenda of a healthy community in the state.
