Cultural sector contributes RM261.3 mln to country’s revenue last year

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1— The country’s cultural sector generated RM261.3 million in national revenue last year and its performance is expected to be better this year said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She said the National Cultural Council (MAKEN) would play an active role in driving the sector’s performance.

“This year, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) is giving serious attention to ensuring the revival of activities related to arts, culture and heritage. A total of RM50 million has been allocated for rehabilitation purposes under the support grant for the tourism and cultural sectors.

“Of that amount, RM25 million is reserved for the cultural sector. As of June this year, 25 per cent has been approved for use. As of June 29, 81 applicants have been approved to receive the cultural sector support grant totalling RM12.4 million, including those who have attended the state-level non-governmental organisation workshops,” she said.

She said this in her speech at the handing over of the letter of appointment to MAKEN members here today.

MAKEN, which was established in October last year, is tasked to provide advice, views and suggestions to Motac on the development, progress and strengthening of policies related to arts, culture and heritage, she said, adding that the council serves as the highest discussion platform for arts, culture and heritage activists from various backgrounds.

“This council serves to provide advisory services through consultation and discussion with Motac on culture, including its development at the international level; submit views on the improvement of the implementation of cultural programmes in line with the National Culture Policy as well as provide suggestions and recommendations on new ideas regarding the direction of the sector,” she said.

Nancy said council members were selected among respected individuals with extensive experience who have contributed to the country’s arts, culture, and heritage, adding that MAKEN was set up to replace the National Advisory Council on Culture which was active from its inception in 1976 until 2003.

MAKEN members include the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (Aswara) rector Datuk Dr Mohamed Najib Ahmad Dawa (chairman), Tunku Datuk Seri Zain Al-‘Abidin Tuanku Muhriz (deputy chairman), Malaysian Entertainment Journalists’ and Writers’ Association (WHAM) president Datuk Tengku Khalidah Tengku Bidin and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities lecturer Dr Regina Garai.
