Japanese travellers rank third among foreign tourists in Selangor

SHAH ALAM, July 17 — Japanese tourists are anticipated to continue to be the third-highest visitors to Selangor by the end of this year, says Tourism Selangor.

Its chief executive officer Azrul Shah Mohamad said that this is based on the 2019 figure and taking into account the gradual opening of the country’s borders.

“We do not have an exact number based on our target. However, in the recent two years (before the Covid-19 pandemic), Japanese visitors to Selangor were the third highest.

“Since the country’s borders have gradually opened, we aim to meet a similar goal,” he said when met at the 46th Bon Odori Festival at the Shah Alam National Sports Complex, here last night.

According to Azrul, a number of the visitors from the land of the rising sun are interested in eco- and sports-related tourism and are also expatriates who work in the state and

Previously, Azrul was reported to have said that from 2017 to last year, Selangor was the most sought-after travel destination for Chinese tourists.

In 2021, travellers from the country would make up 26 per cent of all international tourists that visit the state.

In the same year, Singaporean visitors recorded the second-highest figure at 8 per cent out of the total number of foreign tourists, followed by Japanese visitors at 7 per cent.

Domestic tourists made up 59 per cent of the number of travellers to the state.
