Major power outage draws ire of public, #blackout hashtag trending on Twitter

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — Social media platforms today were flooded with complaints from the public regarding a major power outage in the peninsula that affected parts of the Klang Valley but also in areas in other states.

The outage started at 12.39pm but Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) was quick to respond, restoring supply to most areas within 20-40 minutes except to certain parts in the Klang Valley that were hit.

Social media users expressed frustration about the situation, leading to the #Blackout hashtag to trend on Twitter.

Among the complainants were social media users in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan; Kuantan, Pahang ; Sungai Petani, Kedah and Kajang, Selangor.

A Twitter user using the ‘pixel-purr’ account was among those who expressed confusion at the sudden development.

“Hello @Tenaga_Nasional what’s up? Suddenly there is a power outage? I hear major areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and Puchong also have power outage,” wrote the user.

The situation also caused the frustration of account user ‘Beardr888ps’ who asked for an explanation and further action from TNB.

“@Tenaga_Nasional what happened? Why are power outages happening more often? We need answers ….. Who will pay if the items in my fridge go bad? I want a discount code for my next bill please!,” he said on Twitter.

But despite the tension, there were also netizens who gave funny reactions by equating the unexpected situation with the celebration of ‘Earth Hour’ in addition to relating it to a Hollywood movie.

Meanwhile, a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) spokesman informed that the situation also temporarily affected traffic lights and closed-circuit camera (CCTV) services in several areas in the capital including Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail.

According to DBKL, traffic personnel were mobilised to control and monitor traffic following the disruption.

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd in a statement also stated that the disruption affected rail services in the Klang Valley, particularly the Ampang-Sri Petaling Light Rail Transit (LRT) line at approximately 12.48pm, involving 11 stations from Bandar Tun Razak LRT Station to the Pusat Bandar Puchong LRT Station .

“As a result of this problem, the trains moved more slowly and stopped for a long time on the platform. Affected passengers have been offered a free one-way travel coupon which needs to be redeemed at the customer service counter,” said the statement, adding that services were fully restored at 1.35pm.

According to Malaysia Airports, services at Kuala Lumpur Airport (KLIA) were also affected involving the main terminal building.

“We are sorry that KLIA main terminal building is currently experiencing power supply interruption. Our engineering team is communicating closely with TNB to resolve the matter,” it said.
