Malaysia, Indonesia universities team up for mobile incinerator research

BANDUNG, July 1 — Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia and Telkom University (Tel-U), Indonesia have established a university-company research platform to develop and improve the technologies related to byproduct waste from mobile incinerators.

The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) took place at Tel-U, here, and was attended by UiTM deputy vice-chancellor (Research & Innovation) Prof Dr Norazah Abdul Rahman and Tel-U Faculty Electrical Engineering dean Dr Bambang Setia Nugroho.

The industry linkages with NR Link Systems Sdn Bhd (NRLINK) and PT. Galura Pajajaran Teknologi (PT GAPTEK) were the strategic partners and way forward amid the rising demand for solid waste treatment globally, Norazah said.

The MoA outlines the objectives and activities of both the universities and two companies, which includes providing matching grants in designing, developing, improving and marketing the mobile waste incinerators.

These four parties will be involved in the designing, development process and improvement of the mobile waste incinerators, while both industry partners will handle the manufacturing process, marketing and maintenance of the product.

UiTM’s research team will also study how it could use bottom ash of combustion solid waste as green construction and infrastructure materials in construction industries for environmental sustainability.

Education Attaché of the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta, Mohd Mubarak Shamsuddin, NRLINK managing director Nurul Azmi Zainuddin and PT GAPTEK director Dudung Ruhimat were also present during the event.

Mohd Mubarak said Education Malaysia Indonesia, a unit under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education, is encouraging more universities to collaborate between these two countries via strategic partnerships.

“This event was a very good example of international cooperation and research collaboration in tertiary education,” he said.
