SHAH ALAM, July 26 — The state government has proven its commitment to addressing Selangor’s underemployment issue by organising the Selangor Mega Job Fair which will provide approximately 20,490 employment opportunities to the people.

State executive councillor for social welfare V Ganabatirau said the job fair, which took place on June 11 and June 12, received encouraging feedback from the public with 8,201 registration from jobseekers.

“Apart from that, another initiative introduced by the state government is the job search portal, www.selangorjobportal.com

“Launched on May 12, the portal allows youth groups in Selangor to look for real-time vacancies offered by employers when they sign up.

“Concurrently, Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI has also implemented the Selangor Kerjaya programme which provides exclusive job opportunities for Selangor citizens through effective career matching.

“Applicants need to register by visiting the website www.selangorkerjaya.com.my,” he said when answering a question from Rawang state assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat on underemployment issues during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, here today.

Ganabatirau also told the assembly that other state government initiatives to help people join the workforce include the Roda Darul Ehsan Initiative, the Jobcare roadshow, the Jaminan Kerja Selangor programme, the Selangor Job Placement programme, the Job Placement and Apprentice programme in collaboration with Carsome Academy, and the Gig Care programme.

“On top of that, the state government strives to provide relevant skills and training through various programmes such as the Inisiatif Kemahiran Teknikal dan Ikhtisas Smart Selangor (IKTISASS) which helps to improve the youth and fresh graduates’ marketability,” he added.

Ganabatirau said the underemployment issue does not affect the state’s investment performance.

“Selangor has recorded the highest approved manufacturing projects in the country compared to other states. This proves the state remains a top destination for investors. Nonetheless, the state government is aware the lack of a workforce could be among the challenges that we need to address in continuing to attract investment to Selangor.

“Therefore, several actions will be taken in collaboration with Invest Selangor, like focusing on efforts to woo high-tech investment or capital intensive-based industry, to create an industry that involves value-added manufacturing, and to create an industry which adopts automation and robotics in its manufacturing process,” he said.
