SHAH ALAM, July 7 — The state government seeks to implement the installation of some 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in public places within three years, in collaboration with local authorities and private sector.

State executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian said this will encourage more people to use EVs and help reduce carbon emissions.

He is also aiming for the installation of at least 1,000 units of chargers in public parking lots for this year, including in shopping malls, to meet consumer demands.

“We are positive that with these facilities, more individuals will become confident in buying EVs, with its prices possibly becoming more affordable with high demand,” Hee said at the sustainability forum session of the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) Pre-Launch Symposium at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Convention Centre, here today.

RS-1 focuses on the four main themes of economy, society, sustainability and governance, which serve as a roadmap for achieving the Smart State agenda by 2025.

In the 2022 Selangor Budget tabled in November last year, the state government allocated RM10 million for the EV charging station installation project, in addition to incentives for businesses and industries investing in the facilities.

The offers include reducing licence fees and assessment taxes, as well as giving EV users free parking privileges in areas under the administration of the local authorities.
