‘The Monsoon’ share top spot with South Africa after three races in SSL Gold Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — The national sailing team – The Monsoon – got their Star Sailors League (SSL) Gold Cup qualifiers off to a stylish start by sharing top spot with South Africa in Group 7 after three races at Lake Neuchatel in Switzerland today.

In the third race, The Monsoon finished second in 49 minutes and 43 seconds behind leaders South Africa, who clocked 48:16s, while India were third in 50:36s, according to https://goldcup.starsailors.com/live/.

With the win, South Africa earned three points while Malaysia and India gained two points and a point respectively.

Malaysia are now in second spot in the group with seven points, the same as leaders South Africa. India are next with four points.

In the first and second races that took place at the same venue yesterday, Malaysia finished second and first respectively to collect five points and lead Group 7 before being overtaken by South Africa today.

The SSL Gold Cup is participated by the top 56 sailing nations in the world, with Malaysia ranked 51st in the world.

The national team has 11 sailors but only nine will take part at any one time.

The national team sailors are Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy, Mohamad Faizal Norizan, Asri Azman, Nuraisyah Jamil, Ahmad Khairulhafiz Ahmad Khmbali, Muhamad Uzair Amin Mohd Yusof, Ong Khong Shing, Ahmad Faizul Aswad Mohamed, Ahmad Hakhimi Ahmad Shukri, Mohd Amsyar Syahmi Mohd Ajwi and Mohd Azhar Sa’don Zubir.

In 2021, the SSL Gold Cup held three eight-nation test events in Switzerland. Then, Malaysia finished third behind South Africa and Thailand but ahead of France, Mexico, Ukraine, Turkiye and Tahiti in the first test event of the competition.
