SHAH ALAM, Aug 14 — The state government welcomes the initiative of collecting used or damaged shoes for recycling, which is a more sustainable method than sending it to landfills.

State executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han said efforts taken by the Lake Edge Residence Puchong neighbourhood to collect over 100 pairs of used shoes should be lauded for the sake of future generations.

“Shoes that are in good condition will be repaired and given to those in need while worn-out shoes will be recycled and used as materials for children’s playground or sports court,” he said when contacted by SelangorKini.

Ng believed many people wanted to dispose of their old shoes but did not know where to do so.

“They do not want to throw it together with other domestic waste and this shows that our community is more aware of sustainability.

“Therefore, I believe more people will search for the right method to dispose of their old shoes. I hope this effort will be continued in other areas,” he said.

Yesterday, Ng officiated the ‘Old Soles New Life, Repurpose Your Old Shoes’ programme at Lake Edge Residence Puchong which was also attended by Subang Jaya state representative Michelle Ng Mei Sze.
