SHAH ALAM, Aug 23 — The flash flood in Taman Sri Muda at Section 25 on Saturday (August 20) was caused by heavy rains with a total rainfall reading of 92.5mm, said state executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim.
He said the rain, from 12pm to 8pm, also recorded 59.5 mm rainfall within an hour, which is categorised as very heavy.
“The allegation of the tidal floodgates being opened late to cause flooding is completely untrue whatsoever.
“The Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department implemented flood mitigation operations involving the operation of tidal gates and pump systems, in line with the set standard operating procedures,” Izham said.
He was speaking during a press conference on the state government’s plan to overcome the flood issues at Taman Sri Muda, at the Selangor State Secretariat Building earlier today.
Izham added the tidal gates are operated in a ‘closed’ state whenever rainfall occurs, due to Sungai Rasau’s water level exceeding the water level of the main drainage ditch at Taman Sri Muda.
“Indeed, at that time Sungai Klang’s water level was also high due to tidal. However, the situation was brought under control after the department activated the automatic operation of all available pumps.
“All flood pump assets with a capacity of 8,960 litres per second lowered the water level of the main drainage ditch in Taman Sri Muda. Site monitoring determined there was no water overflow in Sungai Klang, the main ditch drainage, and the flood reservoir pool from 4pm to 7pm,” he said.
