MBPJ: No compound for not flying Jalur Gemilang

PETALING JAYA, Aug 20 — Business property owners who choose not to fly the Jalur Gemilang in conjunction with this year’s National Day celebrations will not be penalised, says the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).

While at present every premise is being encouraged to fly the flag, Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir said that the local council does not completely rule out the idea of imposing a fine next year.

We have not taken any action if the Jalur Gemilang is not displayed but perhaps in the future, we will go in that direction (imposing a compound).

For now, we only encourage it. However, if this approach is welcomed, we won’t need to impose a compound,” he said when met by reporters after the launch of the Semarak Jalur Gemilang MBPJ programme at the MBPJ headquarters, here yesterday.

On Thursday, it was reported that the Ipoh City Council would impose a RM250 fine on business premises that refuse to comply with the instructions to fly the Jalur Gemilang in conjunction with this year’s National Day celebrations.

Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said the compound would be issued in compliance with the general conditions written on the back of each business premises’ licence under Section 107(2) of the Local Government Act.
