Nearly RM50 mln allocated for bund upgrade, drainage to overcome floods in Taman Sri Muda

By Mustakim Ramli

SHAH ALAM, Aug 23 — Approximately RM46.5 million has been allocated as an immediate measure to overcome the issue of floods at Taman Sri Muda in Section 25, said state executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim.

He said a total of RM11.5 million has been used to upgrade and raise the bund in order to prevent water overflow, as well as to purchase pumps, generators and sirens.

Up to RM15 million has also been allocated to the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department to construct a reservoir, with the remainder allocation used to upgrade ditches and pumps.

“The reservoir and pump will be built near the Kemuning – Shah Alam Highway. Permission from the Malaysian Highway Board has also been obtained, with the works commencing next year.

“Bear in mind there are certain things that must be resolved, like land issues seeing as it has owners and requires approval. The engineering work will also take time,” Izham said.

He was speaking during a press conference on the state government’s plan to overcome the flood issues at Taman Sri Muda, at the Selangor State Secretariat Building earlier today.

On August 20, heavy rain in several localities around Shah Alam resulted in a few areas, including Taman Sri Muda, becoming flooded under nearly a metre of water.

The water began to recede several hours after it began, with rescue teams remaining at the locations as a precaution.
