SHAH ALAM, Aug 12 — Approximately RM14 million has been allocated for the implementation of various flood mitigation projects in Kuala Selangor this year, said Bukit Melawati state assemblyman Juwairiya Zulkifli.
She said RM10 million was provided by the Federal government while the remainder by the state government, which will be used to repair river banks, river deepening and drainage maintenance.
Among the villages frequently affected by flash floods include Kampung Tanjung Siam, Kampung Bukit Kuching and Kampung Asahan, in addition to isolated cases in Assam Jawa.
“Kuala Selangor is a district that constantly experiences floods towards the end of the year during the monsoon season with the high-tide phenomenon.
“We will continue to monitor the situation in risky areas and carry out repairs, as a preparation to reduce the flooding risks,” Juwairiya said on August 5.
At the end of last year, over 5,000 residents in the Bukit Melawati state constituency were sent to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) after rising floodwaters enter their homes.
The phenomenon only receded after 12 days in Bukit Melawati, compared to three days in other places, which proved to be among the challenges faced by the state assemblyman and her team in coordinating aid to the victims.
Juwairiya, who is also Political Secretary to the Menteri Besar, took the initiative to open PPS’ in several locations including at Stadium Tertutup Kuala Selangor, which had not been initially gazetted as an evacuation centre.
