RS-1 creates new industry, boosts state goal to contribute 30 pct to nation’s GDP

SHAH ALAM, Aug 11 — Selangor will be able to contribute more to the national gross domestic product (GDP) should the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) is implemented comprehensively and in accordance with its framework.

Movement for Monetary Justice (MMJ) vice chairman Dr Ahmed Razman Abdul Latiff said that due to its focus on infrastructure-related issues and subsequent creation of a new industry, the RS-1 development plan is anticipated to boost the economy.

“This move increases the state’s economic resources. This growth agenda also aids in raising the productivity of already-existing sectors.

“If RS-1 is effectively implemented, it will be able to increase Selangor’s contribution to the nation’s GDP to 30 per cent or even more,” he said when contacted by SelangorKini, yesterday.

The Putra Business School associate professor also said that the Sabak Bernam Development Area (Sabda) and the Integrated Development Region in South Selangor (Idriss) in the RS-1 would boost additional economic output.

“These two projects are important for development and would provide much-needed relief to the people. Sabda and Idriss would open up high-skilled employment opportunities.

“With regard to food safety, Sabda would also provide a guarantee, and this move is timely given the current situation. It can also increase household income concurrently,” he added.

With a contribution of approximately 25 per cent last year or one-fourth of the national economy, Selangor overtook other states as the highest contributor to the country’s GDP.

On August 2, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari stated that the RS-1 would be able to assist the state in contributing 30 per cent of the GDP by 2025.

Despite the state’s target in the 2022 Selangor Budget to contribute 30 per cent to the GDP by 2030, Amirudin said that Selangor will still be able to reach that goal by 2025 with the implementation of the RS-1.

He stated that the RS-1 takes into account the implementation aspects of comprehensive policies, programmes, and initiatives between the state and federal governments without excluding the five-year plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan. (MP12).
