SHAH ALAM, Aug 24 — The Selangor government has entered into a partnership with an information technology (IT) company Gogolook to combat cybercrime in the state.

State executive councillor for consumer affairs Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni said under the initiative consumers can detect fraud calls using the company’s mobile app Whoscall.

“Users can download the app to their mobile phones and find out whether the call received is genuine or from a scammer.

“This application will be launched tomorrow (August 25). We hope consumers will use this application to become more aware thus avoiding more people from being scammed,” he said here today.

Tomorrow’s launching ceremony will take place at the Selangor State Secretariat Building’s foyer in conjunction with the online fraud awareness forum.

Mohd Zawawi said they are implementing several initiatives including working with social media influencer Boss James to increase community awareness of cybercrimes.

“We have also organised competitions on essay writing, speeches and forums for students. All these have given positive feedback,” he said.

Earlier this month, the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) announced that 11,367 cases of cybercrime were reported from January to July this year compared to 18,510 cases of commercial crime in the same period.

CCID deputy director (cybercrimes and multimedia) Senior Assistant Commissioner Victor Sanjos said the trend of cybercrimes from 2016 till July 2022 showed an increase from 39 per cent to 61 per cent.

He said there are six types of scams namely Macau Scam, e-commerce crimes, non-existent loans, non-existent investments, 419 scams or love scams and phishing.
