Selangor to table unity and integration council end-October

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Aug 16 — The state government is anticipated to table the Selangor Unity and Integration Council (MPIS) during the State Executive Council Meeting some time in October.

State executive councillor for unity Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said several procedures need to be carried out before the council that serves as an advisory body to the state’s unity policy is finalised.

“Because this is a newly-established portfolio, the council has to first identify its direction and policies, which would lead to the planning and implementation of incentives related to unity.

“Before the policy was drafted, we had held engagement session with state representatives to get their input and we received constructive feedback on various aspects,” she told SelangorKini.

Dr Siti Mariah said one of the issues highlighted in the policy framework is the strengthening of unity through improving a just state administrative system.

“We will also ensure that the policy does not discriminate against any groups and celebrates diversity, which contributes to character building of the nation for the progress and prosperity of Selangor,” she added.

Previously, Dr Siti Mariah had said that the state government collaborated with Institut Darul Ehsan, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Institute of Ethnic Studies and several other non-governmental organisations to develop the policy.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari had also said that the MPIS was part of the state government’s initiative to promote unity in the state.
