SERDANG, Aug 9 — Yayasan Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (Yayasan MRCB) has sponsored burger stalls for two underprivileged single mothers in Selangor, to start their own business.
The Burgernita pilot project, in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Coalition of Women Organization (KLSCWO) and Kelab Wanita Ikon Malaysia (KWIM), aims to improve the economic status of impoverished single mothers.
Its chairman Datin Jasmine Abdullah Heng said recipients Norizan Yahaya, 60, and Syarifah Rokiah Syed Harun, 64, who trade in Semenyih and Serdang Raya respectively, were provided with complete equipment at a maximum amount of RM7,000, as well as training.
“It is exciting to be able to implement this project and help single mothers from the B40 low-income group, so they have a stable income to support their families.
“The assistance will ease the burden of those who may not have the opportunity to do business, due to a lack of capital. We will continue to empower these groups through other future programmes,” she said.
Heng was speaking at the aid certificate handover ceremony to Norizan and Syarifah earlier today, which was presented by Political Secretary to the Menteri Besar Juwairiya Zulkifli,
Juwairiya, who is also the Bukit Malawati state assemblyman, said the state government welcomes initiatives by corporate companies and NGOs to restore and develop the single-mother economy.
She described the project as a complementary one to existing state initiatives like the Yayasan Hijrah Selangor business loan schemes.
“I understand that Burgernitais the second project implemented by KWIM and sponsored by MRCB. This is a positive development and we are very grateful to all the parties involved.
“We will identify several single mothers in the state through community service centres and local NGOs, so they can be involved in this project as MRCB is looking for 10 people to sponsor,” Juwairiya said.
