Smart road management system expands to local councils

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Aug 12 — The smart road asset management system, which began operations early this year, is now being made available to all local authorities, says Selgem Sdn Bhd (Selgem).

Its Geographical Information System senior officer Ahmad Afiq Aiman Abdullah said that for now, several local governments are interested in utilising the software developed by Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd (KSSB).

“It took six months to complete the system. A process of training and trial was run before employing concessions appointed by the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) in each district to monitor, identify and repair damaged roads beginning early this year.

“We, therefore, intend to extend this system to the local councils. Some of them, in principle, approved of the presentation’s findings, but it is up to them to make the call,” he told Selangorkini.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Afiq said members of the public can lodge complaints with pictures of road conditions and terrains through the system on Twitter.

He said that other social media sites such as Facebook might also be included in the mechanism for filing complaints.

“Our focus right now is on Twitter as it is more accessible, quick and easy to retweet. The users can include the hashtags #infrasel #daerah #namajalan (to their complaints).

“We had also introduced to the public the functions and the proper way to report at the five series of the Selangor Penyayang roadshow,” he added.

The system, which was developed by local experts and combines artificial intelligence (AI) technology, light detection and amplification (LiDAR), was launched by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari on March 16.

It is also equipped with 360-degree cameras and intelligent drones that can assess road problems like potholes automatically while digitising workflows and complaints.
