By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Aug 3 — The state government will set up a Food Security Committee to advise on the implementation of the food supply chain in Selangor.

State executive councillor for agricultural modernisation and agro-based industry Izham Hashim said that based on the initial proposal, the committee will comprise several state executive councillors including Rodziah Ismail (entrepreneur development) and Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni (consumer affairs and halal industry) as well as himself.

He said the committee will also involve several government agencies, departments and state government-linked companies (GLCs) that are related to food agriculture, industry players, public and private higher learning institutions as well as professional groups.

“During the initial discussion, we received proposals on the importance of providing more accurate data related to the agriculture sector. We were also told to focus on the production, logistic and marketing aspects, which are elements that have been included in the Selangor Agro Transformation Plan (PeTA),” he said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly here yesterday.

In his response to a query from Kuala Kubu Bharu state assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong, Izham said the committee would also emphasise on aspects such as food, ability and pricing.

“Most importantly, we need to focus on several aspects including the use of land, the preparation of seeds and breed, food support as well as storage and marketing so that the food supply chain could be implemented efficiently.

“The need to set up the committee will be discussed in more detail soon to ensure it could be carried out in a holistic manner,” he said.
