Unemployment in Selangor still under control — Exco

By Siti Rohaizah Zainal

SHAH ALAM, Aug 1 — The state government remains committed to tackling unemployment through the implementation of several measures including organising the Selangor Job Fair.

State executive councillor for youth development Mohd Khairuddin Othman said although Selangor’s unemployment rate stood at 3.2 per cent in the first quarter of this year as opposed to 2.9 per cent last year, the situation is still under control.

“It is still under four per cent, which is better than Malaysia’s unemployment rate which is at 5.2 per cent.

“It is still under control, the rate should not be used as the only indicator to claim that we did not manage to control unemployment in the state,” he said at the winding-up session on the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) bill during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly here today.

He said that the state government continues to strive in ensuring that work offers are able to meet the demands of job seekers thus reducing unemployment.

“There are many job seekers as well as those who offer jobs. We have our own job fair event where we help to find employment for the unemployed. After they start working, state executive councillor for employee empowerment V Ganabatirau will take over,” he said.

The Selangor Mega Job Fair 2022 that was held on June 11 and 12 has helped 1,996 individuals to land a job, while as of July 6 3,601 individuals have been called for a second interview by potential employers.

Among the companies that participated in the fair are Kumpulan Perangsang Selangor Bhd, Daikin Malaysia Sdn Bhd, DHL Express, DRB Hicom Bhd, Giant Malaysia and Malayan Banking Bhd.

Others included Media Prima Digital, Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (Proton), Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, Shopee Malaysia, Sport Direct MST Sdn Bhd, and Toyota Auto Body Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

The second round of the Selangor Mega Job Fair is scheduled to be held in September at the Malaysian Agricultural Expo Park (Maeps) in Serdang.
