SHAH ALAM, Aug 18 — Former Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Zaharah Ibrahim has been appointed the new chairman of the National Islamic Legislation Committee (JPIK) yesterday.
According to a post on Selangor Royal Office Facebook, the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj presented the appointment letter to Zaharah. The appointment takes effect from June 30 this year until June 29, 2024.
“JPIK is upgraded from the Syarak and Civil Law Technical Committee which was established in 1988 by the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI).
“Among the duty of the committee is to discuss the standardisation of the shariah law as well as the harmonisation of the civil and shariah laws in Malaysia,” the statement said.
The appointment letter was presented at the Istana Bukit Kayangan, Shah Alam, and witnessed by other JPIK committee members.
Also, present were former International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) rector Professor Datuk Seri Dr Zaleha Kamarudin and Syariah Judiciary Department director-general Datuk Mohd Naim Mokhtar.
