Jakim: Zaharah’s appointment to help MKI committee achieve goals

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 1 — The Islamic Development Malaysia Department (Jakim) is confident that the appointment of the former Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Zaharah Ibrahim as the chairman of the National Islamic Legislation Committee of the National Council of Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) can lead it to achieve its goals.

Jakim director-general Datuk Hakimah Mohd Yusoff said the department was pleased with Zaharah’s appointment based on her extensive experience and credibility in the legal field.

The 259th Meeting of the Conference of Rulers on June 30 has consented to upgrade MKI’s Technical Committee on Syariah and Civil Laws to National Islamic Legislation Committee.

MKI set up the technical committee on Syariah and Civil Laws on May 6, 1988, among others to discuss the standardisation of civil and Syariah law in Malaysia.

Zaharah was appointed the committee chairman from June 30 until June 29, 2024, and received the instrument of appointment from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris, who is the MKI chairman on August 17.
