By Zareef Muzammil

SELAYANG, Sept 12 — The Selangor government is implementing more cybersecurity programmes for next year, to combat the worrying trend of online fraud cases in the state.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government is also ready to cooperate with the police in resolving such issues, which he said have ensnared many people recently.

“After concentrating on data collection and analysis, we will focus on cybersecurity as part of the smart state project, by next year.

“This could help to prevent the theft or unlawful collection of data by certain quarters, as seen with the widespread problem of online fraud activities lately,” he said.

Speaking at the Gua Damai Extreme Carnival here yesterday, Amirudin also advised the public to exercise caution and avoid becoming victims of fraud.

The Menteri Besar also asked members of the public to be wary of any false information or messages received through their respective smartphones, adding they should not easily believe such information without first verifying them

“At the present, many are desperate which has led them to try and commit online fraud. This is especially worrying as over 70 per cent of people of Selangor are connected (with technology).

“So online fraud can affect every individual via their respective smartphones,” he said.

On Saturday (September 10), media reports stated that online fraud in Selangor is at an alarming level, with approximately RM92.8 million in losses recorded in the first nine months of 2022.

Head of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) in Selangor ACP Azman Ali said fraud cases account for 76.9 per cent of the state’s commercial crime records.

In total, 2,011 cases were online fraud with another 601 cases being non-online fraud.
