Selangor, Penang leading in medical devices industry — Exco

SHAH ALAM, Sept 2 — Selangor and Penang have been chosen as the top destinations for medical device manufacturers to invest in, said state executive councillor for trade and investment Dato’ Teng Chang Khim.

He said that currently there are a substantial number of medical device manufacturers, including domestic and international companies, that have set up operations in both states.

“This is an advantage for Malaysia as they are two states that are toe-to-toe with each other to attract more investors in the sector.

“As for Selangor, we still have much room for improvement (to woo investors), given that demands for medical tourism have increased over the years,” Teng said during a press conference following the signing and exchange ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Invest Selangor Berhad (Invest Selangor) and the Medical Device Authority (MDA) earlier today.

The MoU was exchanged between Invest Selangor chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Hasan Azhari Idris and MDA CEO Ahmad Shariff Hambali.

The MoU will facilitate discussions leading toward the establishment of a formal and flexible collaborative framework between Invest Selangor and MDA in the field of medical devices and related technologies, with the main purpose of making Selangor an investment-friendly destination for prospective investors in the industry.

Among the objectives of the MoU is including the medical device industry as one of the components in the Selangor International Expo (Medic) (SIE Medic), to identify and introduce strategic industry partners or potential investors who may be deemed suitable for participation in SIE Medic, and to promote SIE Medic at seminars or programmes organised by MDA.

This year, SIE Medic 2022 will be held from October 6 to October 9 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

It is part of the annual Selangor International Business Summit, organised by the state government and powered by Invest Selangor.
