SHAH ALAM, Sept 19 — Selangor drew in a record 10.2 million domestic tourists last year, which was the highest among other states in Malaysia.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac), the data was obtained by the Domestic Tourism Survey conducted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) for 2021.

“After Selangor, it is followed by Kuala Lumpur with a total of 9.1 million tourists, Sarawak (6.5 million tourists), Negeri Sembilan (5.5 million tourists), and Penang (5.1 million tourists),” said the ministry on Facebook.

On September 11, Menteri Besar Dato’ Amirudin Shari said that the 2023 state budget would be focusing on upgrading the facilities at the state’s tourist sites.

He said that in the previous budget, the promotional components to strengthen the tourism industry post-Covid-19 had been emphasised.

To aid tour operators, the Selangor government budgeted RM114.6 million from 2021 to 2025, which includes recovery grants and post-pandemic promotions.
