SHAH ALAM, Sept 25 — The state government is satisfied with the Selangor contingent’s achievement in the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma 2022), which concluded yesterday.

State executive councillor for sports development Mohd Khairuddin Othman said despite not achieving the target of 40 gold medals, the athletes have shown their competitiveness to place Selangor on the fifth ranking out of 15 competing states.

“Even though Selangor did not manage to finish among the top three, I am still satisfied with the athletes (performance) as I believe they have done their best.

“For most of the sporting events, we managed to advance to the finals round, however, we ended up with bronze medals, maybe the athletes lack the finishing touch resulting in them missing the gold medals,” he said when met after attending the Malaysia Armed Forces veterans appreciation event in Paya Jaras, yesterday.

Commenting further, he said a post-mortem would be held with the Selangor National Sports Council (MSNS) soon to identify which aspects could be improved in the future.

“Even though the records made in Sukma 2022 are not recognised, we still have to do the post-mortem as the athletes were representing the state.

“We have to identify what caused the drop in our athletes’ performance, could it be because of the incentives, field or sports development itself because Selangor is the nine-time champions of the games,” he added.

Held from September 16 to 24, the Sukma 2022 saw Johor named the overall champion for the first time by winning 77 gold, 52 silver and 43 bronze.

Defending champions, Terengganu was in second place with 64 gold, 49 silver and 56 bronze) and the Federal Territories (55 gold, 68 silver and 64 bronze) in third place.

Selangor was in fifth place with 31 gold, 55 silver and 44 bronze.

With 490 participants and 75 coaches taking part in 30 sporting events, Selangor had previously set a goal to win 40 gold, 40 silver, and 45 bronze medals at Sukma 2022.
