State govt stimulus packages help boost tourism sector last year

SHAH ALAM, Sept 27 — The economic stimulus initiatives implemented by the state government during the Covid-19 pandemic have helped to boost the Selangor tourism sector in 2021.

Tourism Selangor in a statement issued in conjunction with the World Tourism Day 2022 said, as a result, Selangor recorded the highest number of domestic visitors last year with 10.2 million visitors.

It said the state government has allocated RM114.6 million in a five-year (2021-2025) plan to reset the tourism sector that involved all related industrial sectors.

Among the measures that have been put into place to boost the state’s tourism industry are the Selangor Maritime Gateway, Kita Selangor, tourism grants, and the Go Selangor mobile app.

Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Azrul Shah Mohmad said the economic stimulus contained in the Kita Selangor 2.0 Package has also helped to increase domestic tourism in the state.

“A total of RM 2.5 million was allocated for initiatives that included one-off cash aid incentive to tourism association, financial assistance grants, state-sponsored tourism vouchers and digitalisation training programmes for tour agencies,” he said in the statement today.

Tourism Selangor said the state government has been steadfast in aiding the nation’s economic revival in accordance with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goal.

It said this was done by formulating and enforcing policies that boosted sustainable tourism, which in turn created jobs as well as promoted local culture and products.

The agency said this aligns with the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) mission for World Tourism Day 2022, which is to prioritise people as well as the planet by uniting governments, businesses, along with communities around a common goal of making the tourism industry more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.
